WeHo vs. LA City: The Critical Distinction
The single most important thing to understand about cannabis lounges in Los Angeles is that they do not exist in LA city proper. Every consumption lounge operating in "LA" is actually in West Hollywood — an independent, incorporated city of approximately 35,000 people that is entirely surrounded by the City of Los Angeles but has its own mayor, city council, police force, and cannabis regulations.
This is not a technicality. It has real consequences for visitors. If you are staying in Hollywood, Downtown, Santa Monica, or anywhere else in greater LA, you cannot legally consume cannabis at a lounge without traveling to West Hollywood specifically. Always check the address before assuming a venue is accessible from your location.
West Hollywood is not a neighborhood of LA — it is an independent city with its own laws. LA city proper has been working on lounge regulations (a December 2025 DCR proposal targets the 2028 Olympics), but as of early 2026, only WeHo has operational consumption lounges.

All lounges are in West Hollywood (independent city). LA city proper does not yet permit consumption lounges. AB 1775 now allows food, beverages, and live entertainment.
"Emerald Village WeHo"
West Hollywood has issued 16 consumption lounge licenses, clustering cannabis hospitality along Santa Monica Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard in what the city has branded the "Emerald Village." The concentration is deliberate: WeHo's city government has embraced cannabis hospitality as a core part of the city's identity, alongside its established nightlife, LGBTQ+ culture, and entertainment industry presence.
The result is the most developed cannabis hospitality district in the world. Nowhere else can you walk between a celebrity-backed lounge with koi ponds, a three-story gallery-dispensary-lounge, a members-only club styled after Soho House, and a farm-to-table cannabis restaurant — all within a few blocks of each other.
AB 1775: The Game-Changer
In January 2025, California Assembly Bill 1775 took effect, transforming what consumption lounges can offer. Before AB 1775, lounges were essentially smoking rooms. Now they can serve:
- Food — full menus, not just snacks
- Non-alcoholic beverages — coffee, juice, specialty drinks
- THC-infused beverages — canna-cocktails, THC seltzers
- Ticketed live entertainment — comedy, music, drag shows, art events
AB 1775 does not allow alcohol service at cannabis lounges. The two remain legally separated in California. But the bill turned WeHo's lounges from consumption spaces into full-service entertainment venues — places you go for an evening out, not just to smoke.

What to Expect at a WeHo Lounge
Cannabis consumption lounges are a genuinely new type of venue — there is no perfect analogy. Here is what to know before you visit:
- Age: 21+ with valid government-issued photo ID, same as dispensaries
- Purchase on-site: Most lounges include a dispensary or retail counter where you buy cannabis to consume on the premises. You typically cannot bring your own.
- Consumption methods: Smoking (joints, pipes, bongs), vaping, and edibles are generally available. Each lounge has its own rules about what is permitted.
- Food and drinks: Thanks to AB 1775, most lounges now serve food and beverages. THC-infused drinks are available at several venues. No alcohol.
- Pricing: Expect to pay for cannabis products plus a per-session fee, cover charge, or minimum purchase. Premium lounges like Sunset Social Club charge a monthly membership.
- Reservations: Some lounges accept or require reservations, especially on weekends. The Original Cannabis Cafe has a host stand and can have waits.
- No alcohol: California law does not allow cannabis and alcohol at the same venue. Lounges serve non-alcoholic beverages and THC drinks, but no beer, wine, or spirits.
WeHo lounges are full evening destinations, not quick stops. Budget 1–3 hours. Some accept walk-ins, others recommend reservations. Check each lounge's policy before arriving, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
Getting to West Hollywood
West Hollywood sits between Hollywood and Beverly Hills, accessible by:
- Rideshare: The easiest option. Uber/Lyft from Hollywood runs $10–$15, from DTLA $15–$25, from Santa Monica $15–$20.
- Driving: Santa Monica Blvd and Sunset Blvd are the main arteries. Parking is available but can be challenging on weekend evenings.
- No Metro rail access: WeHo does not have a Metro station. The nearest stations are Hollywood/Highland (Red Line) and Beverly Hills (Purple Line extension).
Do not drive after consuming cannabis. Plan your return transportation before you start your lounge visit. DUI laws apply to cannabis.
