Cannabis Dos and Don'ts in Los Angeles

Quick-reference cheat sheet for visitors. LA's cannabis rules are more complicated than most legal cities — WeHo is not LA city, the tax is 40%+, and the illicit market is everywhere.

DO: The Right Way to Enjoy Cannabis in LA

DO: Buy from Licensed Dispensaries Only

LA has 315+ licensed dispensaries — but also hundreds of unlicensed ones. Verify every shop through the DCC's "Real CA Cannabis" license search before you walk in. Licensed shops have a QR code and DCC license number posted. If a shop has no tax, no stickers, and prices that seem too good to be true — it's unlicensed. NBC found 13 of 15 black-market cartridges contained Vitamin E acetate.

DO: Bring a Valid 21+ ID

Any valid government-issued photo ID works: driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID from any state or country. Every dispensary and WeHo lounge checks at the door. No exceptions. There is no residency requirement.

DO: Bring Plenty of Cash

Add 40% to every price tag you see. Most dispensaries accept cash and debit. Credit cards are rare due to federal banking rules. ATMs on-site charge $3–$5 fees. A "$40 eighth" will cost about $56 after all taxes.

DO: Visit WeHo for Consumption Lounges

West Hollywood is the only place in the LA area with legal consumption lounges. Base your cannabis activities there. The Original Cannabis Cafe (first in America), The Woods (Woody Harrelson), The Artist Tree (gallery + lounge), and others are all within walking distance on Santa Monica Blvd. Full lounge guide.

DO: Start Low, Go Slow

LA flower regularly tests at 25–35% THC. Edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours to hit. Start with 2.5–5 mg THC for edibles, one small puff for flower. Don't double-dose because you "don't feel anything yet." Tell your budtender you're a first-timer — they hear it every day. More at TryCannabis.org.

DO: Use Delivery Services

If you can't get to WeHo or your hotel prohibits cannabis, delivery is legal statewide. Services like STIIIZY, Emjay, and Grassdoor deliver to your door. Licensed delivery is often more convenient than driving to a dispensary in LA traffic.

DO: Keep Cannabis Sealed While Driving

When transporting cannabis in a vehicle, keep it in the original sealed packaging in the trunk or an area not accessible to passengers. Open containers in the passenger area can result in citations — similar to open alcohol container laws.

DO: Tip Your Budtender

Budtenders in LA are knowledgeable professionals. They can navigate you through hundreds of products, celebrity brands, and potency levels. Tip a few dollars, just as you would a bartender — especially if they spent time guiding you as a newcomer.

DON'T: Common Mistakes That Can Cost You

DON'T: Assume WeHo Is Part of LA

This is the most common visitor mistake. West Hollywood is an independent city with its own government, police, and cannabis laws. LA city proper has no consumption lounges. When you see "cannabis lounge in LA," it's almost always in WeHo. Check the address: "West Hollywood, CA 90069" = lounge territory. "Los Angeles, CA" = no lounges.

DON'T: Consume in Public

Public consumption in California carries fines of up to $250. This includes streets, sidewalks, parks, beaches (yes, Venice Beach too), restaurant patios, bar areas, hotel lobbies, parking lots, and any place "open to the general public." Stepping outside your hotel room is public.

DON'T: Bring Cannabis to LAX

Despite LAWA's relaxed enforcement stance, TSA operates under federal law. Cannabis remains a Schedule I substance federally. Do not bring cannabis through any airport security checkpoint. Use it or dispose of it before your flight.

DON'T: Cross State Lines

Transporting cannabis out of California is a federal crime — even to another legal state like Nevada or Oregon. This applies to driving, flying, train, bus, and any other method. Consume everything in California.

DON'T: Drive Impaired

California DUI laws treat cannabis impairment the same as alcohol. Penalties include license suspension, fines, and potential jail time. Use Uber, Lyft, or the Metro. LA traffic is dangerous enough while sober. Don't consume in a moving vehicle, even as a passenger.

DON'T: Use on Federal Land

National parks, national forests, military bases, VA hospitals, and federal buildings follow federal law. No cannabis on federal property, period. This includes some hiking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains and other federal lands scattered throughout LA County.

DON'T: Buy from Unlicensed Shops

LA still has hundreds of unlicensed cannabis shops, especially in South LA, the Valley, and commercial strips. NBC testing found 13 of 15 black-market cartridges contained Vitamin E acetate and all 10 tested had pesticides. The LA Times found 25 of 42 legal products exceeded pesticide limits. Licensed shops are not perfect, but unlicensed ones are genuinely dangerous. Read why.

DON'T: Assume Hotels Allow Cannabis

Most LA hotels — even those in WeHo — prohibit cannabis in rooms. Smoking in a non-smoking room can trigger $250+ cleaning fees and removal. Ask about cannabis policies before booking, or use a dedicated 420-friendly rental from BudandBreakfast.com or HiBnB.com.

DON'T: Share with Anyone Under 21

Providing cannabis to anyone under 21 is a criminal offense in California. Adults may purchase and possess for their own use. Providing to a minor can result in misdemeanor or felony charges depending on circumstances. Store all products securely away from children.
