The Most Diverse Dispensary Landscape in the World
Los Angeles has more than 315 licensed retail dispensaries — more than any other city on earth. The city generated $770 million in cannabis sales in 2024, and while that figure is down 41% from the market's peak, LA remains the undisputed capital of legal cannabis retail. No other city comes close to the sheer variety of what you can find here.
What makes LA's dispensary scene unique is not just the number of shops — it is the radical diversity of experiences. A 6,500-square-foot streetwear-meets-cannabis flagship with a 29-foot mural by Retna. A 1920s speakeasy designed by and for women of color. A former Circus of Books adult bookstore turned cannabis boutique. A shop owned by B-Real of Cypress Hill. A vertically integrated grow operation with 70,000 square feet of cultivation behind the retail counter. There is no "typical" LA dispensary.
LA's 40%+ effective tax rate is the highest of any major cannabis market. A $100 product costs $136–$140 after all taxes. This is not a hidden fee — it is the defining economic reality of legal cannabis in Los Angeles. See our What to Expect page for the full breakdown.

What Sets LA Apart
Los Angeles is not just another legal cannabis market. Several factors make it genuinely distinct:
- Celebrity integration. Dispensaries owned or backed by Cypress Hill's B-Real, Woody Harrelson, Jay-Z, Seth Rogen, and others. Cannabis is woven into LA's entertainment economy in a way that does not exist anywhere else.
- Equity pioneers. South LA is home to dispensaries that are nationally significant — Josephine & Billie's was the first dispensary in America by and for women of color. Gorilla Rx was the first Black woman-owned dispensary in LA.
- Legacy operators. Some of LA's best shops — Traditional, Buds & Roses, Green Goddess Collective — have been operating since 2005–2007, before "legal cannabis" was a phrase anyone used.
- The tax crisis. LA's 40%+ effective tax rate is driving customers to the illicit market, which captures an estimated 62% of sales. Over $400 million in cannabis taxes remain unpaid. The legal industry is fighting for survival.
LA's illicit market is massive and aggressive — unlicensed storefronts outnumber legal ones. Verify any dispensary at cannabis.lacity.gov before visiting. Licensed products are lab-tested for pesticides, heavy metals, and accurate potency.
